Climate Change

What is the Global Compact Coalition for Climate Change?

The Global Compact Coalition for Climate Change is an association of companies and organizations supporting the fight with negative effects of climate change. The main aim of the Coalition is to elaborate and implement innovative programmes of social engagement of companies and institutions in order to ensure systematic and long-term support for combating climate change effects and raise social awareness of the subject.

Why climate change?

Global warming prevention is one of the greatest challenges of XXI century. According to IV IPCC Report, climate change is caused mostly by human activity. It is emphasized that the lack of actions aiming to adjust global economy to new climatic conditions will have a fundamental impact on global economy, society and environment.

The Nobel Prize awarded to IPCC and Al Gore in 2007 as well as publishing Human Development Report on the subject (HDR 2007/2008- Fighting climate change: Human solidarity in a divided Word) had a great influence on raising the awareness of the importance of this issue. The Report suggests that climate change is not a distant perspective; the effects of that process –increased frequency of natural disasters - are noticeable nowadays. The Report also proves that people in the developing countries are most exposed to the negative effects of the global warming.

Poland plays an important role in the process of climate change prevention. Due to the transition of economy Poland managed to decrease carbon dioxide emission by 30% in the last 15 years. This fact has been noticed and Poland was awarded with the invitation to organize the 14th Session of United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP 14 UNFCCC) which took place in Poznan in 2008. More information about the Convention is available at: http://unfccc.int/meetings/cop_14/items/4684.php

Such a world’s challenge requires joint efforts on the global scale, however one cannot forget that every person is responsible for their actions which influence climate and environment.

What is the purpose of the Coalition?

The main goal of the Coalition is to create a successful partnership of companies and organizations which are willing to act for the climate change prevention and to create innovative social projects supporting the cause. The Coalition also aims to raise awareness of the society and support civil actions in the field of climate change and its consequences in the world.

Potential benefits of the companies’ participation in the Global Compact Initiative:

  • Joining a globally recognized and elite group which creates an important social and economical initiative.
